Many excellent lodges sit just outside the gates, offering more affordable pricing and cultural visits to nearby Maasai communities , the trade-off is travel time to the entrance each day.

Bordering the reserve are several privately managed conservancies working with local Maasai landowners to protect wildlife while limiting visitor numbers , meaning fewer vehicles, guided walking safaris, and night game drives not permitted in the national reserve.
